  • Most of the time we think of rhythm in terms of music. And yet, it’s really so much more than that. We pretty much experience rhythm in almost anything in our daily lives, e.g., in systems, in processes and in organizations. This often involves groups of people doing one task together, followed by another group of people carrying out different tasks. It’s like a chain of events highly dependent on one another. Being an artist, I mostly compare organizations to an orchestra: there’s the horn section, the rhythm section etc. These are all different entities playing their own part. If everybody just plays their arrangement or whatever’s been written for them, it should sound okay. However, it won’t sound like an orchestra, not unless everybody really syncs up by truly listening to one another. If we all sync up with one another’s rhythm and vibe while communicating or working together, the end results can be amazing!!! Roël Calister was born on Curaçao and is famous for his ability to tastefully mix dance, pop and jazz with folklore elements from Curacao. He is specialized in African and Caribbean instruments, which play a prominent role in Roël’s project Kuenta i Tambu. With Kuenta i Tambu, he has been performing at venues and festivals all over the world for 8 years. In 2005, Roël started drumdrumdrum.nl, which specializes in developing rhythmical concepts and educational programs for schools and theaters. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
