  • Statistics show that men often feel their masculinity is threatened if they come forward with mental health issues and for men of color it is even more difficult to admit are struggling emotionally. Lorenzo P. Lewis discusses how offering mental health services for men of color in the safety of a barber shop not only helps break through the stigma men feel about coming forward with mental health issues but also provides professional mental health services. Lorenzo P. Lewis is a native of Little Rock, Arkansas. Born in jail to an incarcerated mother, Lorenzo struggled with depression, anxiety and anger throughout his youth. At age 17, he almost re-entered the system of mass incarceration he had come from. It was then he began his journey to wellness. After a decade of working in behavioral health, Lorenzo started The Confess Project, an initiative that confronts the stigma around mental health for men of color. Lorenzo helps individuals confess to their issues to begin to build a better process of living. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
